TRICKSTER THEATER
Directed and Conceived by Papo Colo
“The Trickster performance theatre is an experimental approach to presenting performance art in which unique individual voices make up a collective work. The artists develop a specific shared subject. The group performs simultaneously inside an exhibition of the same subject. The curve of performance art is the collective theatre.”

A Flama Films Production
'Confessions of the Face' explores the power of storytelling and the power of the human face as an expression of individuality. Under the direction of Papo Colo, founder and director of Trickster Theater, cultural producer of Exit Art and independent performance artist, an eclectic group of young New York actors have developed ten 10-minute monologues, collectively presented here, using the face as a landscape and a fictional autobiography as text.
Featuring mainly first-generation Americans from diverse cultural backgrounds, each of these monologues relates a distinct history. African-American, Puerto-Rican, Italian, Eastern European, Southwestern, Mexican and Russian actors use recollections of family and cultural history to create the script, using the face as the basic visual material. “The face, the professional tool of the actor, is placed in the middle of their personal emotions,” says director Papo Colo.
Consistent with Trickster Theater’s long-standing commitment to pioneering, interdisciplinary programming, this project synthesizes live performance with new media. In contemporary theater, the actor is treated as an instrument of the script; the personal experience and emotional memory of the actor is set aside. 'Confessions of the Face' elevates and pays homage to the actor, as he or she actively participates, creating personal stories that are, at once, fictional and autobiographical. Theater is presented here as a collaborative enterprise in which the director works with each actor to develop the script. The human face as both landscape and narrative is the primary vehicle of 'Confessions of the Face'.

Performances Written and Performed by: Sarah-Violet Bliss, Lily Burd, Jennifer Claire Dees, Elia Monte-Brown, Maria Silverman
Concept and Direction: Papo Colo

Using the exhibition BRAINWAVE: Common Senses as a stage, Trickster Theater juxtaposed monologues about the brain to create a modular play.
Sarah-Violet Bliss’ piece revealed the inner monologue of an uneasy woman trying to fall asleep.
Lily Burd (on video screen) performed a collage of historical surrealist texts.
Jennifer Dees’ performance explored an encounter with an autistic individual’s terms of communication, and the inherent barriers of language.
Elia Monte-Brown presented “The Last Frontier”, a look at the way beautiful minds are destroyed.
Maria Silverman’s “Mind the Map” examined the space between our physiological brain and the experimental mind.

Saturday, January 19 and 26
Cannon Dialogues uses a visual art exhibition (Exit Art’s Love/War/Sex , on view through January 26) as the stage for a play that is, in part, written by the actors. It is a play in which 2 cannons point at each other; in which the actors’ performances are based on their own texts that are inspired by the narrative papering the walls; with the intervention of ghosts and apparitions; and with music by Francisco Colon Quintero.
Artists: Lily Burd, Sarah-Violet Bliss, Jennifer Dees, Elia Monte-Brown, Carolina Puente, Maria Silverman

“Tropical Area explores geography, the influence of climate over behavior, the exotic nature of tourism, the positive and negative impact of isolation, and the will to reach beyond borders. Tropical Area is a study by dynamic visual actors that are combining sexuality, geopolitics, mythology and beach culture into an evening of effervescence and brainy entertainment, a continuous visual and physical ponder in your spirit. The artists perform simultaneously as they assume characters that provoke the constant atmosphere of the tropics.“ Papo Colo

A Performance in Two Parts
March 22, 2006 Loma De Los Vientos, San Juan, Puerto Rico
May 29, 2006 Bajamar, San Juan, Puerto Rico
Colo takes a ritualistic response to Puerto Rico’s disconnection to the United States due to Puerto Rico’s commonwealth status. He also represents Puerto Rico’s political parties’ struggle that wavers between wanting to be identified culturally as an independent state, yet politically confined to its commonwealth state.
